Director Three - Paul Whittington

Paul Whittington

Paul Whittington is a director and writer. He focuses on many social realisms dramas and enjoys to "get lost in the story". He is most famous for directing 'Little Boy Blue' (2017), and 'The Moorside' (2017). Paul Whittington has a very original directing style that is almost documentary like. He uses handheld shots for almost every scene to make it seem as if we are part of the story and 'involved' in what's happening, he also uses it to emphasise panic, in more hectic scenes the shot will appear shakier. This may be because "The Moorside" and "Little Boy Blue" are both based on true stories so it's important that they feel real and handheld shots do help this therefore I like this directorial choice. The trailer to "The Moorside" portrays how much Whittington decides to use handheld:

Another part of Whittingtons style that I like and will influence my is that he uses bursts of colour in his scenes. For example the frame will contain quite neutral colours and then there will be a bright colour such as a blue t-shirt in "Little Boy Blue" being shown in the first shots of the series that is then a key part of the story, and then in every following episode the scenes contain lots of blue as shown in this shot:

Something that Whittington plays around with a lot is exterior and interior angles. He uses lots of over the shoulder shots which create a sense of looking in on the action rather than being in it, but then he will flip it to extremely tight lightly out of focus close ups that are an interior angle. This almost creates a sense of unease as it is is continuously shifting points of view. This is effective if it is a hectic scene however this is something that I wanted to try to avoid due to creating a panicked hectic sequence for the first Unit Script to Screen, I now want to try something different for this unit so I will not being using Paul Whittington as my director.
